Lithography

Lithography is a planographic printing process developed by Alois Senefelder in the late eighteenth century. Instead of carving an image into a printing surface, traditional lithography allows an artist to draw on a flat stone or prepared metal plate and use the different behavior of greasy materials and water to control where printing ink adheres.

What is lithography?

Lithography is a method of printing from a substantially flat surface. This distinguishes it from relief printing, where the printing areas are raised, and intaglio printing, where ink is held in recessed lines or areas.

In traditional stone lithography, an artist draws on a prepared, fine-grained limestone surface with a greasy lithographic crayon or ink. The stone is then chemically processed so that, during printing, the image areas accept oily printing ink while the damp non-image areas resist it.

Why is it called lithography?
The name is derived from Greek words associated with stone and writing, reflecting the original practice of drawing and printing from stone.

Alois Senefelder

Johann Alois Senefelder was a German-speaking playwright, actor and inventor born in Prague in 1771. While seeking a more economical way of reproducing his writings, he experimented with printing processes in Munich.

Around 1796, his experiments with polished limestone and greasy drawing materials led to the development of the printing method that became known as lithography. Senefelder continued to improve both the chemical process and the equipment required for printing.

In 1818 he published a detailed account of his method in Vollständiges Lehrbuch der Steindruckerey, a major early manual on lithographic printing.

How traditional lithography works

Greasy image areas accept oily ink.

Properly prepared and dampened non-image areas resist that ink. This chemical distinction allows printing from an essentially flat surface.

Prepare the surface

A lithographic limestone is ground to produce an even working surface. Prepared metal plates can also be used for lithographic printing.

Draw the image

The artist works on the surface with greasy lithographic crayons, inks or related drawing materials.

Process the drawing

Traditional stone lithography uses chemical treatment, commonly involving gum arabic and an acidic component, to establish the printing and non-printing areas.

Dampen the surface

During printing, the stone is kept appropriately damp. Water is retained by the non-image areas.

Apply printing ink

Oily lithographic ink is rolled across the surface. It adheres preferentially to the image areas and is resisted by the damp non-image areas.

Print the image

Paper is placed against the prepared and inked surface and passed through a lithographic press, transferring the image to the sheet.

What existed before lithography?

Lithography joined an already mature world of printing. European printers had long used movable type, woodcut, engraving and etching. These processes form different families according to how the printing surface carries ink.

Ink is applied to raised areas of the printing surface. Areas cut away do not normally print. Movable metal type works according to the same basic relief principle.

Printing and non-printing areas remain on approximately the same plane. Their different chemical properties determine where the ink is accepted.

Why was lithography important?

One of lithography’s important artistic advantages was that an artist could work directly on a flat printing surface using drawing materials rather than having to translate every mark into carved or engraved lines.

The process was therefore particularly suitable for reproducing drawn marks, handwriting and other freely made forms. During the nineteenth century lithography became important in fine-art printmaking as well as in commercial and informational printing.

It was used for such materials as illustrations, maps, musical notation, posters and other printed images.

Color lithography

Lithography can also produce multicolored images. Historically, color lithography required separate printing surfaces for different colors. The sheet was printed repeatedly, with the different color impressions carefully aligned.

This alignment is known as registration. Accurate registration is essential because a shift between successive impressions can cause the colors and outlines to appear incorrectly positioned.

Chromolithography became an important method of color printing during the nineteenth century and was widely used for illustrations, advertisements, decorative prints and other colorful printed material.

Traditional lithography survives as an artistic printmaking process, while offset lithography remains important in commercial printing. The word lithography is also used in technologies such as photolithography for semiconductor fabrication, although these processes work very differently from stone lithography.

Offset lithography

Modern offset printing belongs to the lithographic printing tradition, but it does not normally involve an artist drawing on a massive limestone block.

In offset lithography, an inked image is transferred from a printing plate to a rubber-covered blanket cylinder and then from the blanket to the printing surface.

Lithography in art

Original lithograph

A lithograph may be an original print conceived and produced through the lithographic medium itself. It is not necessary for a lithograph to be a reproduction of a painting or drawing made in another medium.

Multiple impressions

Because printmaking uses a prepared printing matrix, multiple impressions can be produced from the same image. In fine-art printmaking, editions may be limited and individual impressions may be numbered.

Lithography and microchips

The word lithography is also used in modern microfabrication. Semiconductor photolithography uses light and photosensitive materials to transfer extremely small patterns onto semiconductor wafers.

This should not be confused with traditional stone lithography. The physical and chemical processes are very different, although both involve creating controlled patterns on a surface.

Common misunderstandings

Lithography is not the same as engraving.

Engraving is an intaglio process involving recessed marks. Traditional lithography is planographic.

A traditional lithographic image is not simply carved into stone.
